A 90-year-old Henley unearthed at a Berlin flea market in 2011 was the starting point to manufacture loopwheeled workers’ shirts and undergarments.

It was by sheer chance, in 2011, that the German fashion designers – and partners – Gitta and Peter Plotnicki stumbled upon a vintage henley at a flea market in Berlin from a no-longer operating manufacturer: Merz b. Schwanen. So impressed by its quality, the couple resolved to track down the original factory and to their surprise discovered that most of its original equipment was still standing. What made garments like that henley so remarkable were Merz b. Schwanen's loop-wheel knitting machines, which knit cotton yarns around a cylinder, eliminating a shirt's side seams.The couple ultimately decided to take the plunge and their gamble paid off: Beyond a flagship-store in Berlin, Merz b. Schwanen now also has a location on Canal Street.

Founded in 1911 by Balthasar Merz, the brand began in Germany’s Swabian Albs, now run by fashion designers Gitta and Peter Plotnicki.
